Protect My Image

By Mz. Leebra Clark

Prologue…

I kept a watchful eye on the time while getting a tire fixed on my man’s 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Church service starts in half an hour and this was one service I refused to miss. I was starting to wish that I had driven one of his other cars to avoid this situation.

“Excuse me but do you know how much longer this is going to take?” I asked the mechanic as he picked up the drill to loosen the bolts on the tire. “I want to be at church on time.”

“No ma’am, but it shouldn’t take too long.” He responded.

‘It shouldn’t take too long’, turned into an hour and I arrived at church almost 45 minutes late and due to my tardiness I felt a little nervous. This was the first time in over a year that I’d seen my congregation. I knew as soon as I walked through the door all eyes would be on me, not because I was late, but because of my absence over the past several months. My heart started beating faster as I approached the entrance of the church. I grabbed the handle, took a deep breath and opened the door slowly as I crossed over the threshold. Walking slowly down the aisle, my eyes met with almost every member of the church. I could tell by the expressions on

their faces what must have been running through their minds. Wasting no time engaging in a stare off, I took the first empty pew I saw, sat down and pulled out my Bible. Halfway through the service, Pastor Cook announced that it was time to give testimonies. I thought for a moment, and figured this would be the perfect time to express my feelings and explain my absence. I tucked my Bible back into my Chanel Diamond Forever Handbag and stood up to walk to the pulpit to give my testimony. While walking to the pulpit, I glanced over my shoulder and saw my parents and former employer. I wanted to run over and tell them how much I missed them because I’ve never gone without talking to them for this long before and I hated that we weren’t talking due to the circumstances. Once I finally reached the pulpit I was ready to bear it all and tell why and what has happened thus far.

“Would you like to sing a song or give a testimony sister Danielle?” Pastor Cook asked as he rubbed my back, sensing that I was a little tense.

I never would have thought any of this would have taken place. I have lived in Atlanta Georgia all my life and compared to most, I have lived a very affluent lifestyle. Back in his glory days, my father was a pro football player. He and my mom moved on up, like The Jefferson’s, and settled into an elaborate house too big for just the two of them. Unfortunately he got injured after just 3 years in the league, and they decided it was the right time to start a family.
